Green Mountain
Planning for sustainable futures
Since 2009, CMEP have worked with international and local partners as part of the Green Mountain Project for a Sustainable Future. The aim of this project is to create the world’s first regional-scale, world-class conservation and development area in the Green Mountain region of Libya. CMEP have been involved in masterplanning consultation, ecological surveying and developing environmental education.
The Green Mountain district covers 5,500 km2 of the Mediterranean coast in the east of Libya. It is recognised as one of 10 ‘mini hotspots’ within the Mediterranean Basin global biodiversity hotspot, one of the richest of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The Green Mountain holds approximately 1000 plant species, with approximately 100 endemic to the region. It is also home to the Cyrene World Heritage Site, alongside other globally significant archaeological sites of Greek, Roman and Byzantine origin.
CMEP are working with a range of partners on:
- Systematic conservation planning for the Green Mountain region
- Habitat and species surveying
- Developing capacity for biodiversity research in Libya
- Environmental education planning
